Road Tripping: Part 8

We waved bye to his parents who were standing on the porch amidst the thick early morning fog that comes in Pennsylvania.

“This is it baby girl,” he said as he drove down the long driveway.

“I cannot believe that our summer together is actually starting.  Like we have been dreaming about this road trip for this entire semester basically, and it is finally here!  We are pulling out of the driveway, it is actually happening!”

He smiled and grabbed my hand.  We had an eleven-hour drive to South Carolina, so it gave us a lot of time to make stops for coffee, sing along to just about every song that came on the radio, and talk.  We had a lot of time to just be able to sit next to each other and talk.  Seems so simple, but it is so sweet.

“This is going to be really good for us,” I said, grabbing the blanket from the back seat.

“What is?”

“This whole thing.  The road trip, and just being able to relax and be a normal couple for a whole summer.  Like we get to see each other every day, and see how we handle that, and I don’t know.  This whole thing is just what our relationship needs.  Like think about it, I honestly don’t know what we would do if we were only going to see each other for a total of maybe three weeks this summer.  I would drive myself crazy.  Like at this point, I don’t think I could do it.  We have been waiting for so long, we need this.”

“I know exactly what you mean baby.  We have been working so hard and doing everything we can so we can have time together, I think that you’re right, if we had to be apart for most of this summer, I would go crazy.  It has been almost two years; we need a break from distance.  I am so excited that I get to sit down with you after work everyday and hear how your day went instead of just texting you about it.  It is going to be weird not needing my phone all the time.”  We laughed, because it is funny, but pathetic at the same time.

We made it to my uncle’s house in SC, which was our first stop!  Being in South Carolina with him was a dream.  My family and I used to vacation to Hilton Head when I was a kid, so my uncle, James, and I went to dinner one night where I used to go and we walked around the marina.  We went golfing and biking too.  It was just a really nice short stop on the way of our road trip.  The memories that we are making together are ones that I don’t want to ever forget.

After the two days in SC, we started our drive to Florida.  You would think that we would get tired of each other after being in a car for hours and hours together, but there was not one moment of silence the entire trip.  He and I talked all the way from PA to FL which made the trip go by fast, and before I knew it, we were pulling into my driveway.
